The Million Series

An expression of greed, value, selfishness and worth

To scratch something that is worth a million dollars

Conceived initially in 2003, the idea of a series of paintings to be a statement on my own greed and the way value was dictated. By the time the idea began to take shape in 2005, the concept was transforming into much more than just a statement on personal greed, it was a work of art, that encompasses contempt at every known reason for doing anything. We are all selfish, no matter who you are or whatever you do, it is for you, and you alone. A ticket to heaven, end all wars, feed the starving, save the planet, you say are doing it for the greater good, but most of all, you are doing it for yourself, because that is what you want.

Scratched 1000000 times on wood panels between 2005 and 2020, The Million series are works that were inspired by Whistler, Picasso, Duchamp, Balthus, Serrano and Hirst that aim to question the very nature of what art represents, and for me, what is worth.

RED MILLION 01

This was the first Million, I was 6 months in when some of the paint began coming away from the wood, which led to the realisation, maybe it would have been better to prime the surface. Shortly after, the painting was primed and started again

GREEN MILLION 01

This is the ugly duckling, yet my favourite, it is both the same colour as the dollar bill and if you look at it long enough, it appears to be transforming into a green monochrome version of Munch’s scream
